Description:
This is a professional position on the Government Advocacy team
in which the incumbent serves as the government advocacy
representative for the AIA to the executive branch of the federal
government and federal agencies, and represents the AIA in
coalitions and on initiatives regarding federal regulatory issues
affecting the practice and profession of architecture.
Duties: Track and monitor federal agency rulemaking relevant to
the architecture profession.
Brief senior AIA leadership on regulatory issues relevant to
the architecture profession.
Draft advocacy letters on behalf of the AIA to federal
agencies, including public comments on rulemakings, and coordinate
grassroots advocacy campaigns through VOCUS on federal agency
issues of importance to architects.
Organize, convene and represent the AIA in meetings with
federal agency personnel.
Develop and manage the AIAs federal procurement
advocacy program and initiatives.
Serve as the AIA staff representative to the AIA Federal
Architecture Task Group and Federal Agency Liaison Group.
Manage and facilitate the Federal Agency Connection (FAC)
program at AIA Conventions.
Manage AIA contracts with GSA and other agencies on issues
of importance to the architectural profession.
Serve as AIA staff representative to federal agency
initiatives that affect the architectural profession, including
international architectural exhibitions and disaster relief.
Develop and facilitate programs at Grassroots, Convention
and other venues to assist members in working with federal
agencies.
Coordinate partnering agreements between AIA and federal
agencies.
Serve as AIA staff representative to various federal
agency/trade association organizations and partnerships, including
COFPAES, TISP and OBO.
Coordinate AIA appointments to various federal boards and
bodies.
Prepare articles for AIArchitect, Angle, etc., on federal
regulatory and agency issues.
Write reports, documents, position papers, op-eds, etc., on
issues related to federal agencies.
Speak on behalf of the AIA at conferences and meetings on
issues important to federal regulations and the architecture
profession.
Assist the federal affairs team in Congressional
advocacy.
Perform related duties, as assigned, or as necessary.

Experience:
Considerable knowledge of the federal government and its
regulatory and rulemaking agencies. Experience in speaking
extemporaneously before groups to inform and persuade. Skill in
communicating complex ideas both in writing and orally. Skill in
designing and implementing programs that increase exposure to
interest areas and working as part of a larger team. Skill in
facilitation, team building, collaborative problem solving,
conflict resolution, and negotiation and active listening. Skill in
analyzing complex subjects quickly, researching and providing
logical presentations both orally and in writing. Ability to
successfully manage multiple priorities and responsibilities.
Demonstrated success working in a team environment through
coordination and communication of delegated responsibilities;
communicating ideas and issues with tact and diplomacy; and
resolving problems collaboratively among members, collateral
organizations/agencies, and the AIA staff. Proficient in the use of
Microsoft Office, including competence in Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Skilled in using Internet browser/internet research-based
methods.
Bachelors degree in Political Science, History or related
field and five years of professional experience in federal lobbying
and/or federal legislative and regulatory processes. Association
experience is an asset.
