Description:

This senior management position on the Contract Documents Management Team provides strategic direction and leads content development for AIA Contract Documents. The Managing Director, Counsel & Editor establishes content development priorities, publication plans and schedules that deliver upon customer needs and supervises a team of lawyers responsible for drafting AIA Contract Documents. The incumbent also serves as a subject-matter spokesperson for AIA Contract Documents for educational and promotional purposes.








Duties:

• Leads content development and life cycle management of standard and model form contract documents with the Contract Documents Committee.
• Leads coordination of the Contract Documents Committee including development of content related quarterly meeting objectives, assuring prompt feedback to committee members, etc.
• Manages and develops the Contract Documents content team including 5 direct reports.
• Manages the team’s responsiveness, tracks quality of service when replying to general public and member inquiries about the documents, and provides updates regarding documents.
• Works with Marketing to conduct market research, understand customer/member needs and gaps. Determines long term content development path to address customer needs.
• Provides support and input into AIA Contract Documents marketing and promotional campaigns collaborating with Marketing and Product Development.
• Coordinates industry dialogue and builds/nurtures external relationships with outside group. Maintains consensus-based liaisons with other organizations about contract document content.
• Provides subject matter expertise to General Counsel’s office to police illegal copying of AIA copyrighted materials.
• Provides assistance to AIA Components (state and local AIA chapters) in their negotiations with state and/or local governments on the use of AIA documents.
• Manages the AIA Contract Documents Content budget, analyzes variances and recommends alterations to achieve goals.
• Establishes and monitors effectiveness of procedures and policies. Identifies key metrics tracks team progress.
• Liaison to MASTERSPEC. Attends MASTERSPEC review meetings to provide AIA Contract Document updates.
• Handles or leads special projects as assigned by the AIA Executive Office

Experience:

Considerable knowledge of technical documents. Knowledge of legal principles and customs and practices of the construction industry. Demonstrated skill in leadership and collaboration. Legal publishing experience strongly preferred. Electronic publishing preferred. Considerable skill in facilitation, team building, collaborative problem solving, conflict resolution and writing/editing. Volunteer management desired.
Skill in MS Office

Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Management, or related field plus ten years of Design and Construction industry experience. J.D. required and architectural background strongly preferred. Travel is required.


Supervisory Requirements:

Directs a staff of 7 full time employees with 5 direct reports
